Thirty-five years. That’s how long “The Jack,” Jack Daniel’s annual barbecue competition, has been stoking the coals of skilled grillers, ambitious pit masters and certified smokers across the globe. And for 23 of those years FINN has been responsible for creating the iconic posters that immortalize the delicious occasion. But the 35th anniversary couldn’t be just any old print series. Judges, contestants and eventgoers alike look forward to the new artwork each year—so much so, the posters have sold out every year they’ve been produced. The client wanted an idea that was fresh and exciting but that could also pay homage to the event’s decades-long history. And so, the “Greatest Hits” series was born. FINN took three fan-favorite lines from previously run posters and reimagined them through a music-themed lens, hand carving new illustrations and bringing them back to life to an entirely new tune. The final renderings were manually carved into wooden blocks and printed one color at a time, one poster at a time. The posters were distributed around the Lynchburg area and showcased online to generate pre-event buzz. The results? The crowd went wild, buying up all the 35th anniversary poster series before the grills were even lit.
